Is Your Makeup Routine Still Working for You? 4 Signs It Might Be Time for a Refresh
A lot of us learned our first real makeup routine at 15, when our moms took us to the makeup counter at Dillard's—and we've been buying some version of the same products ever since.
I hear this from clients all the time: I've used this concealer for years. Or, I've been buying the same foundation forever. We find something that works, learn how to use it, and keep repurchasing it without giving it much thought.
There's nothing wrong with sticking with a product you love. But our skin changes, our lifestyles change, and makeup has changed quite a bit, too. Formulations and technology continue to evolve, giving us products that can be lighter, more skin-like, longer-wearing and easier to work with than what was available when many of us first learned to do our makeup.
Fall is a particularly good time to take a look at what you're using and how you're using it. Between changing weather, family photos, holiday parties and year-end events, a few thoughtful updates can make your everyday routine feel much more polished—without starting over or buying an entirely new makeup bag.
Here are five signs your makeup routine might be ready for a refresh.
1. Your Foundation Doesn't Look the Way It Used To
If your tried-and-true foundation suddenly seems to emphasize texture, settle into lines, look too heavy or disappear halfway through the day, the problem may not be your application.
Our skin changes over time, and a foundation formula that worked beautifully several years ago may no longer be the best fit. Changes in weather can make a difference, too. As we move into fall and winter, skin often needs a little more hydration and different prep underneath makeup.
Before replacing your foundation, take a look at the entire combination: your skincare, primer, foundation formula and powder. Sometimes one small change is all it takes.
And don't assume you automatically need more coverage. Often, a lighter layer of the right foundation paired with strategically placed concealer gives skin a much fresher, more natural finish.
2. You've Been Applying Your Makeup the Same Way for Years
There aren't many absolute rules when it comes to makeup, but techniques do evolve—and sometimes a small adjustment can make a surprisingly big difference.
Maybe you've always placed your blush in the same spot, apply eyeliner the same way you did ten years ago, or automatically powder your entire face because that's how you learned to set your makeup.
That doesn't necessarily mean you're doing anything "wrong." It may just mean there's another technique that works better for your face, your skin and the look you want now.
This is one of my favorite things to work on during a makeup lesson. You don't need to learn how to create an elaborate makeup look. A few small changes in placement, application and technique can completely update an everyday routine.
3. You Own Plenty of Makeup—but Still Feel Like You Have Nothing to Use
If your makeup drawer is full but you consistently reach for the same two or three products, you're not alone.
It's incredibly easy to accumulate products because they were recommended online, looked beautiful in the store or seemed like something you "should" have. But more products don't necessarily make your routine better.
Take a look through what you actually own. Which products do you love? Which ones never seem to work? Which ones do you have no idea how to use?
Sometimes the best makeup refresh isn't adding more—it's figuring out how to use what you already have.
4. Shopping for Makeup Has Become Overwhelming
Walk into Sephora or Ulta looking for something as simple as a new foundation and you'll quickly realize just how many choices there are.
Do you want radiant, natural or matte? Light, medium or full coverage? A skin tint, serum foundation, traditional liquid or stick? And that's before you even start figuring out your shade.
Social media hasn't necessarily made it easier. There is always a new "must-have" product, but a product that looks amazing on someone else may not make sense for your skin, coloring, lifestyle or budget.
Instead of shopping based on what's trending, think about what you actually need your makeup to do. The best products aren't necessarily the newest or most expensive—they're the ones you'll actually use.
Maybe It's Time for an Edit
If any of this sounds familiar, fall is a great time to take another look at your makeup bag.
You don't have to throw everything away or completely reinvent your look. Keep the products that work, update the ones that don't, learn a few new techniques and build a routine that makes sense for your skin and your life now.
And if you're not sure where to begin, that's exactly what I help my clients do.
Through my Makeup Shopping + Lesson, we can shop together for the products your routine is missing and then work through how to use them during a private lesson.
For clients who would rather skip the research and shopping altogether, my Signature Edit is a more personalized, concierge-style experience. I research and curate the products for you based on your skin, preferences, lifestyle and budget, followed by a private lesson and personalized product guide.
Both services are designed around the same idea: makeup should feel fun and approachable—not overwhelming.
